The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Food Safety and Laboratory Services conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on 2/10/2020 As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations the Masala Bistro Indian Restaurant was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Pennsylvania’s food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 13 violations were found.

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • Food employees observed in KITCHEN COOKING/ PREP area, not wearing proper hair restraints, such as nets, hats, or beard covers.
  • NUMEROUS food ingredient storage containers, in the KITCHEN COOKING/ PREP area, is not labeled with the common name of the food. SPICES AND LIQUIDS.
  • RUSTY METAL SHELVING THROUGHOUT WALK IN COOLER.
  • The Person in Charge does not have adequate knowledge of food safety in this food facility as evidenced by this non-compliant inspection.
  • 2 LARGE TRAYS OF COOKED CHICKEN SITTING ON FLOOR TO COOL IN FRONT OF SCREEN DOOR LEADING OUTSIDE.
  • 2 POTS OF FOOD WITH NO LIDS SITTING ON FLOOR UNDER RUSTY SHELVING IN WALK IN COOLER. NUMEROUS LARGE CONTAINERS OF FOOD SITTING ON AND BELOW RUSTY SHELVING IN WALK IN COOLER WITHOUT COVERS OR LIDS.
  • SPICE, FOOD SPILLS & BROKEN EQUIPMENT IN 2 DOOR CABINET ON PREP LINE IN KITCHEN.
  • DUST ACCUMULATION ON FAN COVERS OF CONDENSING UNIT IN WALK IN COOLER.
  • Observed clean dish racks stored on the floor in DISHWASH MACHINE area.
  • Observed clean food equipment and/or utensils in ,BUFFET area, stored uncovered or not inverted. SPOONS AND PLASTIC UTENSILS IN OPEN TRAYS.
  • Old food residue, observed in the handwash sink, indicating uses other than handwashing.
  • Food Employee did not follow proper handwashing procedure. Soap and/or warm water not used. OBSERVED EMPLOYEE USING COLD WATER TO WASH HANDS AS HOT WATER WAS TURNED OFF AT MAIN HANDWASH SINK IN KITCHEN.
  • SOILED WET WIPING CLOTH SITTING ON PREP TABLE IN KITCHEN INSTEAD OF IN SANITIZER BUCKET AS REQUIRED. DIRTY, SOILED ROLLED UP APRON SITTING ON BROWN CUTTING BOARD USED FOR CUTTING BREAD.
  • MOST PLASTIC CUTTING BOARDS HAVE BROWN & BLACK DISCOLORATION AND EXCESSIVE SCORING FROM KNIFE CUTS.
  • BLACK MILDEW LIKE GROWTH ON PLASTIC DEFLECTOR PLATE INSIDE ICE MACHINE.
  • OLD FOOD DEBRIS ON KNIVES AND CLEAVERS SITTING ON SHELF ABOVE FOOD PREP TABLE.
  • Preset tableware is not wrapped, covered or inverted. CUSTOMER TABLES.
  • Paper towel dispenser empty at the handwash sink in the EMPLOYEE RESTROOM area.
