Girl Scout Cookies started in Pennsylvania and, no, they do not fund Planned Parenthood

Harrisburg, PA

Cyndy Ward Witman shared her story saying, “Back in the 50’s, my Mother was the Brownie and Girl Scout leader. All the ordered cookies were delivered by truck to our house, hundreds of boxes. We had to collate every order by hand so the girls could pickup and deliver their orders. The cookies back then were like fifty cents a box, which was filled to the brim, not like only a few in the box today. It was a lot of work, but the cookies were so good.”

Governor Tom Wolf upon learning Girl Scout Cookies started hereĀ  in Pennsylvania said, “Neat fact about Pennsylvania. Can’t wait for my Girl Scouts cookies to be delivered”

People on social media, though, suggest Girl Scouts also fund Planned Parenthood something the Girl Scouts of America emphatically denied in this statement on their website:

Girl Scouts of the USA does not have a relationship or partnership with Planned Parenthood.

Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) does not take a position or develop materials on these issues. We feel our role is to help girls develop self-confidence and good decision-making skills that will help them make wise choices in all areas of their lives.

Parents or guardians make all decisions regarding program participation that may be of a sensitive nature. Consistent with that belief, GSUSA directs councils, including volunteer leaders, to get written parental permission for any locally planned program that could be considered sensitive.
