The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Food Safety and Laboratory Services paid a visit to Pizza Bella in West Pittston on August 8, 2019, for a retail food inspection after authorities received a complaint. Following the inspection authorities cited the restaurant for 9 violations.

The restaurant was last inspected by in October 2018 after a change in ownership.

The inspector made the following observations in support of the findings in the report:

  • The Person in Charge does not have adequate knowledge of food safety in this food facility as evidenced by this non-compliant inspection
  • Observed a build up of food residue on the interior of the pizza Bain Marie
  • Observed a build up of food residue on the non-food contact areas on the deli slicer
  • Observed a build up of residue on the exterior of dough pans
  • Single-service, single-use articles stored in storage area directly on the floor, and not 6 inches above the floor
  • Observed old food residue on multiple food pans, plastic cups and utensils in the clean equipment storage area
  • Chicken wings held at 46 °F, in the Bain Marie , rather than 41°F or below as required. Wings were discarded
  • The hand wash sink was observed to be non-operational at time of visit. PIC directed to use temporary hand wash set up until sink is repaired
  • Observed a build up of dust on surfaces in the storage and seating areas
  • Commercially processed refrigerated, ready to eat, time/temperature control for safety food, located in the refrigeration units, and held more than 24 hours, is not being marked with the date it was opened. Discussed date marking and provided guidance document
  • Wing station Bain Marie observed with an ambient temperature of 48·F and not 41·F or less as required. Unit will be serviced prior to storage of TCS foods
