Hazleton’s Cafe Europa at The Laurel Mall fails health inspection; no soap at sinks to wash hands

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Food Safety and Laboratory Services paid a visit to Cafe Europa at The Laurel Mall in Hazleton and found 11 violations and determining the restaurant failed to be in compliance with food safety  regulations. 

The inspector made the following comments from the February 21, 2019 inspection:

  • Food employee observed in kitchen prep area wearing bracelet on arms
  • Commercially processed refrigerated, ready to eat, time/temperature control for safety food, located in the reach in cold hold unit and the walk in cooler, and held more than 24 hours, is not being marked with the date it was opened
  • Mops are not being hung to air dry
  • Food Employee observed donning single use gloves without a prior hand wash
  • Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips or test kit to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration 
  • Can opener a food contact surface, was observed to have food residue and was not clean to sight and touch
  • Deli meat slicer, a food contact surface, was observed to have food residue and was not clean to sight and touch
  • Ice dispenser of soda machine a food contact surface, was observed to have a mold like buildup, and was not clean to sight and touch
  • Soap was not available at the handwash sink in the food service area
  • Soap was not available at the handwash sink in the kitchen area
  • Person in charge is not monitoring closely enough the risk factors observed during inspection
  • Ice cream in the walk in freezer stored open with no covering
  • Women’s toilet room is not provided with a covered waste receptacle for sanitary napkins
  • Observed sugar and flower bins stored under 3 bay sink in the kitchen prep area, where it is subject to splash
