Swatara Police: 104 calls to 911, threats to police leads to man’s to arrestread more
On February 21, 2019, at approximately 10PM Newville Police say they conducted a traffic stop on a Ford Pickup truck after observing it fail to maintain its lane and nearly striking a mailbox.
Police say the Officer identified the driver as Steven Wheeler of Newburg and noticed blood shot eyes and an odor of alcohol emanating from the vehicle. Wheeler was asked to exit the vehicle and conduct a portable breath test (PBT).
According to police the PBT was utilized suggesting a presence of alcohol. The officer conducted some exercises from the Standardized Field Sobriety Test (SFST) battery.
Police say while conducting these exercises Wheeler was slurring his words and had trouble forming complete sentences. Additionally, authorities allege Wheeler had trouble maintaining his balance and required assistance.
Wheeler was placed in custody for suspicion of driving while under the influence of a controlled substance and transported for a legal blood draw according to police.
The Cumberland County Forensic Laboratory results were received and police say showed positive findings for alcohol with results showing that Wheeler’s blood contained a blood alcohol concentration of .230% by weight in whole blood.
