On January 11, 2019 Harrisburg Police say Arnold Ulysees Jefferies was arrested and charged in connection with the fatal crash that occurred on December 28, 2018, at N 7th and Schuylkill Streets.
Authorities alleged Jefferies was operating a taxicab when he made a left turn onto Schuylkill Street while traveling northbound on N 7th Street in front of a vehicle that was traveling southbound.
According to police the driver of the other car swerved in order to avoid a collision, subsequently losing control and striking a utility pole, resulting in the deaths of Eugene Jackson and Alfonso Hawkins. The driver was seriously injured. Police say Jefferies left the scene without rendering aid or contacting emergency personnel.
Jefferies was charged with three counts of Accidents Involving Death or Personal Injury, two counts of Homicide by Vehicle, and one count each of Aggravated Assault by Vehicle, Fail Stop and Give Info/Render Aid, and Vehicle Turning Left.
Harrisburg Police say on Friday, December 28, 2018 at 6:48PM they responded to the area of N 7th and Schuylkill Streets for the report of a vehicle crash with entrapment. Police and Fire personnel arrived to find the vehicle fully engulfed in fire. Officers observed that the three occupants of the vehicle had been removed from the vehicle by bystanders who had dragged them away from the vehicle before it was fully engulfed by fire.
They 37 year old Jeffries has no significant criminal history.
